Basic wait and recall training requires patience and discipline. The Akita can be highly ‘aloof’ and ‘Independent’. To train Positive Behaviour, mastering a good ‘wait’ and ‘recall’ will need to be constantly practiced as Akita’s like to play and will check their owner is in ‘Alpha’ to guide them on each walk, the type of walk the Akita is having and how to behave in company.

We see Zeus displaying a good ‘Wait’ and ‘Stay’ using ‘Lead Down’. This is completed by allowing the Akita to have the lead connected but left near to the trainer handler to begin a training session. This advanced technique builds trust and confidence in the Akita and the handler.

We see Zeus displaying Advanced Positive Behaviour. Aware, Calm, Ready and Happy. This Advanced Training should only be completed with experienced Akita Trainers.

We see Zeus displaying Advanced Positive Behaviour ‘Wait’ and ‘Stay’ using lead down. Alert, Calm, Aware, Ready. This Advanced ‘Wait’ and ‘Stay’ must be practiced until the Akita responds every time to this behaviour, without challenge, on command and with ‘Acceptance’. The Akita must be allowed to display to the handler that the Akita is confident and ready to respond to the command on cue.
The Wait & Stay behaviour is very important for all dog breeds but especially with the Akita who is an Alpha Dog type and can be dominating, scaling up to very dominating with other dogs. Akita’s should be socialised with care and normally with regular training at the puppy stage. It is not uncommon for the Akita to not enjoy close socialising with other dogs.
