Akitas are muscular, double-coated dogs of ancient Japanese lineage famous for their dignity, courage, and loyalty. In their native land, they are venerated as family protectors and symbols of good health, happiness, and long life.
Akitas are burly, heavy-boned spitz-type dogs of imposing stature. Standing 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder, Akitas have a dense coat that comes in several colors, including white. The head is broad and massive, and is balanced in the rear by a full, curled-over tail. The erect ears and dark, shining eyes contribute to an expression of alertness, a hallmark of the breed.

The Akita is a large and powerful dog breed with a noble and intimidating presence. They were originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. These dogs also tracked and hunted wild boar, black bear, and sometimes deer. The Akita does not back down from challenges and does not frighten easily. Consequently, they are fearless and loyal guardians of their families. Yet they are also affectionate, respectful, and amusing dogs when properly trained and socialized.

Akita Inu is a Japanese breed of dogs that does not go unnoticed due to its imposing, strong, and powerful looks. They are fearless and brave, yet they behave in a calm, quiet, and dignified manner. Akitas are independent and reserved with strangers, but to their family they are docile and extremely loyal, though they hardly ever tolerate any nonsense.
Akitas are large, spitz-breed dogs that were initially raised for hunting bears, but are now kept as pets, therapy dogs or police/military dogs. They have a strong temperament and a very complex personality that is not easily understood. The Akita is dominant and intolerant of other animals, especially same-sex dogs, and they need consistent leaders, capable of firm training.

(All dogs are individuals, which means any single dog from any breed can be any number of ways, both good and not so good. Keep that in mind as we discuss breed generalities!)
If you’re looking for a dog that will keep strangers at bay and vigilantly guard your home and family—but, at the same time, be a cuddly lovebug with you and your family—look no further than the Akita.
The Akita is a strong and courageous dog with an unflappable sense of loyalty to their family. They may be somewhat suspicious of strangers, but they love nothing more than to shower their close humans with adoration, love, and affection.

“Most rescues make exceptionally affectionate pets and extremely loyal companions”
When a dog has come from an unhappy background, it is more likely to develop a deeper bond with a new owner who offers it the love and care it has not experienced previously. They will be eager to please in response to the kind treatment and affection. These dogs will quickly learn to accept the good things the new owners have to offer and are likely bond deeper as a result. Many have known life on the streets, or chained up in a backyard, or worse, and will blossom in loving caring home. Most rescues make exceptionally affectionate pets and extremely loyal companions.

Akita Dog Summary – “Not Just Pets”
The Akita is an Alpha Dog and can be dominating, scaling up to very dominating with other dogs. They should be socialised with care and normally with regular training at the puppy stage, with lots of regular socialising to keep the socialising with other dogs ‘confidence’ maintained. It is not uncommon for the Akita to not enjoy close socialising with other dogs.
